I am an ecologist broadly interested in species interactions and global change. I grew up in Minnesota where I spent countless days exploring the forests, prairies, and lakes around the state. These early experiences gave me an appreciation for the natural world that continues today. As an undergraduate student at the University of Puget Sound I was convinced that I wanted to study animals (because plants were boring). However, towards the end of my program I had the opportunity to study plants and their pollinators in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. This was an eye-opening experience that eventually lead me to pursue a graduate degree focused on plant ecology. I eventually joined Dr. Candace Galen’s plant ecology lab at the University of Missouri where I studied plant-fungal symbioses in an alpine ecosystem that is experiencing the impacts of climate change. I later accepted a postdoctoral position with Dr. Joy Ward at the University of Kansas to study plant physiological and ecological responses to both past and future climate change. These experiences and the amazing women scientists I met along the way have shaped the research that I do today. In addition to science, my hobbies include hanging out with my dogs, hiking, camping, and taekwondo.

I am an undergraduate student from Long Island, New York. I am passionate about understanding the complexities of the human body and using that knowledge to help others through medicine. However, my interest in science extends beyond medicine to broader biological systems, which is why I decided to join Dr. Becklin's research lab. I am currently working on two projects exploring interactions between soil microbes, plants, and ants. This experience has enriched my understanding of biological processes and environmental impacts on living organisms.
Former Graduate Students
Sarah Araldi-Brondolo
PhD in Biology, 2023
Sarah investigated microbial effects on plant responses to environmental stress in a changing climate. She aimed is to understand how feedback between plants and soil microbes influence crucial plant-water relations and mediate plant responses to changing water availability. Sarah completed her dissertation in 2023 and is currently working as a staff scientist for a biotechnology company.
